5 Ways to Serve This MLK Day and Beyond

In honour of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day (observed annually on January 17th) and the powerful messages of service he continually preached throughout his lifetime, we’re giving back the best way we know how: through action. Not sure how to get involved in your community? Check out some of the ways you can make a difference today and year-round with these community service opportunities.

Educate Yourself

Sometimes the best way to make a difference is to start with understanding. This MLK Jr. Day, consider reading, watching, or listening to one of Dr. King’s many works, speeches, and letters to help better understand the missions of the Civil Rights Movement and the unfinished work still to be done decades later. Not sure where to get started? Sync up your Shokz headphones and enjoy the MLK collection on Audible. Listen to the MLK Audible collection here.

Pay It Forward

Headed to a drive-thru on your morning commute? Consider paying for the person’s order behind you. A simple act of kindness can not only change someone’s day but also how they view the world around them. Bonus points: you’ll feel good, too!

Support A Black-Owned or Minority-Owned Business

Skip the major retailers and support small businesses when you shop a Black-owned or minority-owned brand. From wellness essentials to fitness apparel and healthy snacks, there’s a BIPOC-owned company for everything on your shopping list. Check out this list of Black-owned wellness brands and start shopping today!

Donate To A Nonprofit Organization

For those who may be unable to attend an in-person event or participate in hands-on activities, donating to a nonprofit organization is a great alternative. Check out a few of our favourite organizations making a difference and give what you can! Discover a nonprofit here.

Write A Letter

Contrary to popular belief, words are just as powerful as actions. Consider writing a letter to your Canadian senator or congressperson expressing your civic opinion. Putting your thoughts on paper is more revolutionary than you think. Bonus points: read Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s Letter from Birmingham Jail and get inspired. Find your senator here
